Q: How do I register to vote?
Visit our action center to get started.
Q: Can I vote by mail?
Yes. And given COVID-19, you should consider it! As long as you’re registered, you can request your ballot be mailed to you at home, fill it out, then mail it back. This is called an absentee ballot, and you must request it by October 29, 2020. Illinois will make absentee ballot requests available on August 5, 2020.
Q: Can I vote early?
Normally yes, all early vote requests must be received by November 2, 2020. However, there’s no way to know how COVID-19 will impact safety on Election Day. Illinois currently allows every registered voter to use an absentee ballot, no excuse required. So make a plan to request one starting August 5, 2020.
Q: Do I need an ID?
Normally, if you completed your registration in the past and have voted before, you’re all set. If you’re a first-time voter or want to finish your registration on Election Day, you will need to bring a photo ID or a copy of a utility bill, bank statement, or paycheck.
Given COVID-19, you might be planning to vote by mail. In that case, you do not need to include a copy of identification, but your signature must match the one on your voter registration form.
Q: This is my home state, but I won't be home for this election. Can I still vote here?
Yes! As long as you’re registered, you can request your ballot be mailed to you at home, fill it out, then mail it back before Election Day. This is called an absentee ballot, and you must request it by October 29, 2020.
